Dr. John VanLeeuwenwins the Rotary Club of Charlottetown Royalty’s 2021 Mentor Award for his international development work in Canada and Kenya. Dr. VanLeeuwen has made important contributions to his profession, serving in leadership roles with numerous national and international organizations including Farmers Helping Farmers and Veterinarians without Borders-Canada (more information). August – September 2021
Epi on the Island 2021: Two Epi on the Island 2021 summer courses were held this year. The first course, “Bias in Observational Studies”, was offered over 10 days from August 23 to September 3, by Drs. Ian Dohoo(AVC) and Simon Dufour from Université de Montréal (UdeM). The course had both in-class (at the Saint-Hyacinthe campus of UdeM) and online participation. The second course, “Applied Concepts of Bayesian Risk Assessment in Animal Health and Food Safety”, was offered entirely online from September 8 to 21, by Dr. Javier Sanchez (AVC). In total, the two courses had 28 participants, mainly from across the US and Canada.

Anna is a full-time PhD student at the Laboratory of Molecular Epidemiology and Cellular Biology at Federal University of Lavras (Laboratório de Epidemiologia Molecular e Biologia Celular Universidade Federal de Lavras), Brazil. She will be with us from mid September, 2021 to mid January, 2022. Anna’s local supervisor is Dr. Javier Sanchez.

Peter Kimeli(Supervisor: John VanLeeuwen ) has won two awards: Faculty of Graduate Studies Award of Distinction – UPEI and the Governor General’s Award for best PhD thesis in 2021. His thesis title is: Determinants and improvements of calf parasite load, growth and behaviour on smallholder dairy farms in Kenya. Congratulations, Peter!
